Heaven's Off

HEAVEN’S OFF
One April Evening, oh he thought about leaving
For California, or just away from here
Oh, he didn't want to grieve them; how he hated to bereave them
But better, still, to leave them, than leave them living in fear
He was born a soldier, and he found when he got older
He didn't have the shoulder, ah, but he had the head
Oh, he went and told his daddy, and he said, "My Patti,
I'm so glad I had thee; I’ll love ye 'til I'm dead
And heaven's off somewhere
Far away from those who care
And I intend we'll meet each other there
Since you we're younger, I knew the day might come, ah
I'd have ye run, ah, far away from here
I know I don't need to warn ya - they'll be coming for ya
But when you get re-born, ya send a picture of ya, dear"
He got a tattoo of a pistol, on his way out of Bristol
And he crossed the big river - goodbye, to Tennessee
Well, of course there was some trouble - when you break someone's bubble...
But he kept his heart supple, and his spirit free
And heaven's off somewhere
Far away from those who care
And I intend we'll meet each other there
Always something of a rover, and the road's not over
And he's always becoming, all that he can be
He was never militarily, but a soldier, verily
And with his new name, well he sent that picture to me

Coming Back to Bloom

COMING BACK TO BLOOM
Drifted from the city to escape the din
Drifted to the harbor where the eddies spin
Could no longer reach the water, now the shore’s hemmed in
Coming back to bloom just to wilt within
Coming back to bloom just to wilt again
Placing twenty dollars on an old coat pin
Wasting twenty dollars on a new Moleskine
Lord, I have the will but not the discipline
Coming back to bloom just to wilt within
Coming back to bloom just to wilt again
Ooh, lamp-lit roads won’t lead you home
Ooh, with no comb, the bees must roam
Coming back to blooms just to wilt again
Entered in the field to be a Jacobin’
Ended up another faded mandarin
Never be the hero or the heroin
Coming back to bloom just to wilt within
Coming back to bloom just to wilt again
Dreamed another crucifixion mannequin
Nailed me to the wall, a soldier slipped it in
Fear to feel at all, like it’s a mortal sin
Coming back to bloom just to wilt within
Coming back to bloom just to wilt again
Ooh, lamp-lit roads won’t lead you home
Ooh, with no comb, the bees must roam
Coming back to blooms just to wilt again
Coming back to bloom just to wilt within
Coming back to bloom just to wilt again

LOVE’S TOO LONG (For Pike County)
Love is just too long - it’s too long for Pike County
Everyone I’ve known has moved on without me
Well they tear that mountain down
Turn that river around
So I guess I’m moving on, before it drowns me
Veins that once ran like gold, but it’s mud I leave behind me
Lungs that won’t grow old - the black dust will remind me
That there’s bad blood in this town
And no more good in the ground
And there’s no one young left around to bind me
Ah well, you make a deal amid the rock and the steel
And it can keep you around for a spell
Our union was strong, but the work - it’s all gone, and
I’m lonely - ha - we’re all lonely
But I’m lonely as hell
Because love is just too long - it’s too long for Pike County
Every dream has gone, like the songs that used to ground me
Well they tear that mountain down
Turn that river around
So I guess I’ll keep moving on ’til it’s found me

Gideon Gray

GIDEON GRAY
Gideon Gray, there is no going back, now
And why should you wonder at where you are?
Oh, you wrote the play, so don’t overact, now
And try to remember that there isn’t a star
Up on the tightrope, between Mercury and Mars
Maybe you’ll find a new line for an old role
Maybe you’ll find it rough
And maybe you’re thinking, maybe enough is enough
Gideon Gray, if you’re not painting portraits
Why should you worry as if you are?
Oh, it’s not your way - to be handing out forfeits
Mistaking your fortunes for doors you left ajar
And try to remember that there isn’t a star
Up on the tightrope, between Mercury and Mars
Maybe you’ll find a new line for an old role
Maybe you’ll find it rough
And maybe you’re thinking, maybe enough is enough
You can start at the start with your heart in your hand
And do more than your part, ’til the part is the plan
If the horse pulled the cart, but the cart overran
Can you just start over?
Gideon Gray, of the rarified refrain
Why should serenity come so hard?
Oh, when you start your day alone in the bike lane
You never remember you ever could’ve been so scarred

Sleeping on a string of floors
Hard enough being your own editor
You want everything, everything, everything, everything
And every nerve perverted and raw
You’ve been working every side of the law
Can’t remember, remember, remember, remember what for
Counting on it working despite
Being aware you’re being quaint, if not trite
Not seeing any sing, any sing, any sing
Any single reason to believe you were right
Ooh, you thought you wrapped it up nice and tight
It’s unraveling-raveling-raveling-raveling tonight
You’re in doubt
Human doubt
Go to school, go to work
You need this whole thing like a hole in the head
And you never, no, never, no, never, no, never, no
Read the comments right before you go to bed
Crying while you’re handing your sword
To Anonymous @ 1:34
It’s a trap, it’s a trap, it’s a trap, it’s a trap, it’s a door?
You’re in doubt
Human doubt
